Academy Woodwinds and Academy Brass: Rautavaara 95 years
9 October marks 95 years since the birth of Einojuhani Rautavaara. Sibelius Academy’s wind bands celebrate the birthday with a programme that sheds light on different aspects of Rautavaara’s composer personality.
The concert’s programme includes works selected from different periods. Rautavaara’s breakthrough piece, A Requiem in Our Time, was created during the composer’s studies and devoted to his mother who died in war.
The concert culminates in Rautavaara’s Military Mass (“Sotilasmessu”), which was composed by the commission of the Finnish Army for its 50th anniversary celebrations in 1968. The composer himself wrote this about his work: “The music of Military Mass looks at war and soldiers through the eyes of soldiers which may easily be even sarcastic.”

Siba Winds
Siba Winds (formerly Academy Winds) is the seasonal wind ensemble of the Sibelius Academy. It has existed in its current form since 2012, when lecturer in wind conducting Peter Ettrup Larsen established the ensemble. Siba Winds includes separate brass and woodwind ensembles Siba Brass and Siba Woodwinds.
The performers are selected from among orchestral instrument students for rehearsal periods which last 4–6 days and culminate in a public concert. The work schedule mimics those of professional orchestras. Siba Winds is coordinated by Petri Komulainen, lecturer in wind conducting.
